Antonio Brown tweets “Just want to retire with Steeler”, later pinning a message to the top of his profile and adding in follow-up, “Don’t play Jus Retire so we’re clearing”; The 33-year-old was released by the Pirates after leaving mid-game on Week 17 of the 2021 season.

Free agent wide receiver Antonio Brown took to social media on Monday that he wants to retire as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers despite his acrimonious split with the team in 2018.

It was unclear if the controversial figure meant he was ready to retire from football now. In March, Brown expressed interest in joining the Cleveland Browns.

Brown was named to seven Pro Bowl teams and five All-Pro teams during his nine years with the Steelers (2010-18), for a total of 837 receptions for 11,207 yards and 74 touchdowns. But after he fell out with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and was benched for an important Week 17 game due to missing practice, he asked for a trade after the 2018 season.

After stopping with the then-Oakland Raiders and New England Patriots, Brown last played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021.

He played in the team’s Super Bowl LV victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, throwing for the third touchdown of the game, securing his first and only ring.

But like Pittsburgh, his departure from Tampa Bay was controversial as he took off his pads and jersey and left the field in the third quarter of a Week 17 road win over the New York Jets last season.

A few days later, the Buccaneers released Brown, and it was widely reported that the team forced him to play injured and covered up facts related to his injury. Then-head coach Bruce Arians denied the allegations.

Brown told TMZ Sports in March that he would not get the ankle surgery he needs until he is signed to a new team.

Brown has had a string of off-field incidents, distractions and legal troubles throughout his NFL career. He spent the first half of the 2020 season suspended for numerous violations of the NFL’s personal conduct policy. He turned himself in to Florida police in January 2020 over allegations of battery, theft of an unoccupied vehicle, and criminal disorderly conduct.
