Somerset beat Glamorgan by one run in a Royal London One-Day Cup thriller at Taunton, with the hosts’ new A-List captain Ben Green hitting 87 of 72 balls.

Somerset crashed to 26-4 – Michael Hogan (4-33) broke the higher order – after losing the draw and being put at bat in a rain-stricken contest that was ultimately reduced to 37 overs per side by rain

But Green, hitting number seven, broke 11 four and a six on his pivotal hit. He paired 86 runs with Lewis Goldsworthy (41) for sixth field, as Somerset eventually posted a score of 180-7.

Glamorgan, in response, fell short at 179-9. Billy Root and Tom Cullen were the top scorers with 37, sharing a 75-run position, but couldn’t find much support elsewhere.

Young Somerset closers Kasey Aldridge (3-39) and Sonny Baker (2-41) shared five of the wickets, while Green added to their excellent start at 2-32.

Andy Gorvin (12th) needed a six on the last ball of the game, thrown by left arm spinner Goldsworthy, and although he landed a powerful four over the pitcher’s head, he was unable to clear the rope to secure a famous victory.

The other two Royal London One-Day Cup games scheduled for Wednesday – Yorkshire vs Northants Y Kent vs Lancashire – both were canceled due to rain.

Will Luxton’s debut in ’68 brought Yorkshire out of trouble against Northamptonshire before the weather prevented the visitors from pursuing their goal of 223.

Luxton, 18, led the locals’ recovery from 69-6 to 222 in the final. Northamptonshire closer Jack White impressed by going 3-38 in his A List debut.

Only five balls from the Northants chase were released before the players were called off and the match finally abandoned.

In Kent, only 14.5 total overs were possible before rain intervened and the contest was canceled. Lancashire was 71 unbeaten at the time, with Josh Bohannon 39 not out and Keaton Jennings unbeaten at 24.
