Shakib Al Hasan impressed for Bangladesh with bat and ball against Papua New Guinea

Shakib Al Hasan put on an impressive display in all respects as Bangladesh crushed Papua New Guinea by 84 races in Group B to qualify for the Super 12 stage of the ICC T20 World Cup.

Shakib scored 46 in Bangladesh’s 181-7, which also featured a fifty-of-27 ball from Mahmudullah, and then weighed 4-9 as Papua New Guinea doubled to 24-6.

Kiplin Doriga fought hard to give the chase some respectability, hitting a bold 45 of 34 balls, but was left stranded as innings closed at 97 with 19.3 overs.

The victory was Bangladesh’s largest at the T20 internationals in terms of racing and left Scotland and Oman to eliminate it for the only remaining Super 12 spot available from Group B.

Bangladesh couldn’t afford a slip after losing to Scotland in their opener and went 45-1 in six overs, their most successful power play of the tournament so far.

Kabua Morea finished 2-26 for Papua New Guinea after picking up Mohammad Naim’s wicket for a duck

Shakib scored three sixes and fell trying to reach his half century with another, but Charles Amini needed a good catch in the air off Assad Vala (2-26) to put him on track.

His 37-ball knock was outscored by Mahmuddullah, who posted the tournament’s fastest fifty so far, with 27 balls, before being caught on the edge with a limit no-ball from Damien Ravu (2-40).

Papua New Guinea had little respite as Bangladesh racked up 68 runs in the last five innings overs to record the highest total of the tournament so far: Afif Hossain (21 of 14) and Mohammad Saifuddin (19th of six) inflicted late hurt.

If Papua New Guinea’s challenge seemed daunting, it quickly became impossible as they collapsed to 14-4 in response.

Mohammad Saifuddin opened the floodgates catching Lega Siaka lbw by five and skipper Vala fell to a magnificent one-handed catch by the side of Nurul Hasan’s leg in front of Taskin Ahmed.

Shakib deepened the roads with four express windows, including the one of Sese Bau who fell trying to throw the roulette on the rope.

Mahmudullah posted his fifty in just 27 balls, the tournament’s fastest half-century so far

Chad Soper (11) helped carry the chase past fifty in partnership with Doriga before being castled by a Yorker Saifuddin (2-21).

Goalkeeper-hitter Doriga fought bravely, hitting two sixes and four fours, and Papua New Guinea nearly hit his overs just for Taskin Ahmed (2-12) to finish with three balls remaining.
