CAs planned, Clemson’s quarterback, Trevor lawrence, was selected in the No. 1 in the 2021 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. The player, two meters tall and winner of the national championship in 2018, was the first ‘pick’ in the pools of all the experts, and the predictions were fulfilled.
Lawrence is the second player (after Jadeveon Clowney in 2014, who went to Texans) to come out on top after becoming the No. 1 prospect in the country. Something remarkable about the night of the draft is that there were five quarterbacks selected in the top 15.
Going back to number 1, in high school, broke the Georgia state record in passing yards and passing touchdowns, which previously had Deshaun watson, who in the face of his university stage also headed to Clemson.
Trevor’s college career was as successful as it was in high school. Pitched for 10,098 yards, 90 touchdowns and 17 interceptions in his three seasons with the Tigers. The one from Knoxville led Clemson to the national championship in his freshman year (2018) after taking the start in Game 5 of the season. Finished second in the 2020 Heisman Trophy vote, overtaken by Alabama’s DeVonta Smith (Picked 10th by the Eagles), after throwing for 3,153 yards and 24 touchdowns in 10 games this season. Lawrence will no doubt give Jaguars history a boost.
In the second position of the Draft appears Zach Wilson, another very talented quarterback who showed great growth last season. Being a complete player in all facets has opened the doors to number 2, although his versatility should not be confused with the skills of, for example, Patrick Mahomes.
The third place in the Draft was again for a QB, Trey lance, which sets course for San Francisco 49ers. All the experts point out that Lance will not explode in his first year and perhaps not in his second, but that his learning stage in the league will depend on him being a future star.
Who are the other draft winners?
One of the winners are the Chicago Bears, who negotiated to go up in the Draft and thus elect in position 11. In this way they have been able to do with Justin fields, who was expected higher and is considered the best college QB after Lawrence. Perhaps the revelation of his epileptic seizures would set many back.
Another successful franchise is the Patriots, which has come out of this Draft strengthened because, without moving, they have chosen the quarterback they wanted and to which they aspired: Matt Jones (pick 15). He fits into Josh McDaniels’ offense and while Belichick has reiterated that he trusts Cam Newton, he already has a new apprentice to his liking.
Chargers One could consider a priori another of the teams that comes out very well, with Rashawn slater (Pick 13), who will do an extraordinary service as left tackel to Justin Herbert. Slater could be a star almost immediately in the NFL.
