Miami Dolphins defender Xavien Howard asked to be swapped a few hours after Tuesday’s training camp.
“I played this deal for two seasons and didn’t complain, but everyone knows that I completely outplayed this deal,” Howard said.
“I’m one of the best full-backs in the NFL, and the record backs up that claim. However, I’m the second highest paid full-back on my own team, and that’s not even close. “
Howard said he never asked for a new contract, adding: “We wanted to sort things out with Dolphins and came up with solutions – like a guarantee for more money – that we felt were win-win for both parties.
“But the Dolphins refused everything we offered. I don’t feel like Dolphins are appreciated or respected.
“Just like they can take a business-oriented approach, so can I. That’s why I want to make it clear that I am not happy and requested a deal. “
Howard has amassed $ 93,000 (£ 67,000) in fines after missing the Miami compulsory mini-camp last month.
