Ashley Giles has been relieved of his duties as England managing director following England’s 4-0 Ashes loss to Australia.

Giles had found his position under pressure along with head coach Chris Silverwood and hitting coach Graeme Thorpe when the ECB reviewed England’s uninspiring performance in Australia.

The 48-year-old took over in January 2019 after succeeding Sir Andrew Strauss, who will now take over the role temporarily.

Tom Harrison, Chief Executive of the ECB, said: “I am extremely grateful to Ashley for his commitment and contribution to men’s cricket in England over the last three years.

“Under his leadership, teams have achieved some remarkable results, the most memorable of them being the dramatic victory at the 2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, while facing some of the most difficult times cricket has ever seen. English.

“He is well respected throughout the game and has made a great contribution to the ECB and England men’s cricket.

“After a disappointing men’s Ashes this winter, we need to make sure we set the conditions in our game to allow our test team to be successful.”

Giles said: “I would like to thank everyone for the support they have given me, particularly all the staff and players, as well as the Board for giving me this opportunity.

“The last two years have been incredibly challenging and I am proud of what we have been able to deliver under the most difficult of circumstances. This has certainly protected the future of the game in England and Wales.

“Despite these challenges, over the past three years, we have become the 50+ World Champions, the highest ranked T20I team in the world, we remain the fourth ranked Test team and our Under 19s have just arrived. to the World Cup final for the first time in 24 years I wish all our players and staff much success in the future.

“Now I’m looking forward to spending some time with my family before looking at the next challenge.”
