Baker Mayfield could make his LA Rams debut Thursday night against the Las Vegas Raiders, although the newly signed QB will only start if John Woolford’s permanent neck injury puts him out of action.
McVeigh told reporters, “No matter [Mayfield] playable or available in an emergency is something we’re going to keep working on.
“In my experience, it would be unprecedented because of everything that is required of a quarterback to bring him in in such a short amount of time and make him leave.
“But I think he would be capable of it if we asked.”

Starting quarterback Matthew Stafford (neck) and star wide receiver Cooper Kupp (ankle) have been placed on injured reserve with long-term issues and may be sidelined for the season, while three-time Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald (ankle) is expected to miss a second consecutive game on Thursday evening.
Reserve QB Wolford is listed as “doubtful” due to a neck injury. If he can’t get away, Mayfield and third forward Bryce Perkins will be the only healthy players available to the Rams under center.
Woolford has lost in two starts this season with a 61.3 completion percentage, 390 passing yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. Perkins got the only start in Week 12 against the Kansas City Chiefs, completing 13 of 23 passes for 100 yards, one TD and two picks.
Mayfield arrived in Los Angeles on Tuesday night after asking for a release from the Panthers, dropping to third on their QB depth chart behind starter Sam Darnold and backup PJ Walker.
