Former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores credits the race as a factor in the NFL team’s decision to fire him in January.
Flores, recently hired as a senior defensive assistant with the Pittsburgh Steelers, has filed a class-action lawsuit against the NFL alleging hiring practices are racist and has no plans to drop the lawsuit despite his return to coaching in the league.
Flores, who led the Dolphins to a 24-25 record in three years, said on a podcast, “I think race played a role in my firing. I mean, I was asked to do some things. which were.
“I was difficult to work with. I don’t think my white colleagues would be asked to do what I was asked to do.”
Flores did not give details of what the Dolphins asked him for, which he considered racial.
The 40-year-old is now on a team under Mike Tomlin, one of three black head coaches in the NFL, along with Lovi Smith of Houston and Mike McDaniels of Miami, who self-identifies as biracial.
Flores was interviewed for a job in Houston that eventually went to Smith and claimed he was not hired due to pending litigation against the league.
Pittsburgh General Manager Kevin Colbert insisted earlier this week that Flores’ hiring was based on his success: The Brooklyn-based coach won four Super Bowl rings during his tenure with the New England Patriots and made defensive calls during the 13-score win. : 3. over the Los Angeles Rams in 2019, giving the franchise its sixth title overall.
