Report suggests it would be “surprise” if Kyler Murray played for the Arizona Cardinals next season under his current rookie contract; The quarterback’s camp is reportedly considering the draft, which starts in two weeks from Thursday, as a deadline for a new deal.
The search for defenseman Kyler Murray for a new contract with the Arizona Cardinals has taken a turn, with NFL network On Thursday, it was reported that agent Eric Burckhardt had withdrawn his opening offer.
A report released on Thursday said it would be a “surprise” if Murray played next season on his current rookie contract, which will pay him $5.5m (£4.2m) in 2022.
sports illustrations added that Murray’s camp is considering the draft, which starts two weeks from Thursday, as the deadline for a new deal.
The drama began to boil in February when Murray removed all mention of the team from his social media. He later spoke out to call reports of the breakup “bullshit” and said he only wanted to win championships.
But two weeks later, Burkhardt released a more than 1,000-word open letter to the Cardinals, detailing that Murray had earned a long-term contract after three seasons in the NFL.
According to Burkhardt, the offer he made “provides financial protection, is in line with the current QB market that compares his results to their respective rosters, lowers his 2022-23 salary cap to allow the Cardinals to re-sign other deserving teammates and add additional free agents and, most importantly, represents a real commitment by the organization to see if their end goals align.”
However, this proposal is reportedly not being considered. This offseason, four more quarterbacks — Aaron Rodgers, Matthew Stafford, Deshawn Watson, and Derek Carr — signed renewals or new contracts worth more than $40 million a year. Kirk Cousins extended in Minnesota is valued at $35 million (£26.8) on average.
In 46 starts over three seasons, Murray threw for 11,480 yards, threw for 70 touchdowns and 34 interceptions while completing 66.9% of his passes.
He added 1,786 yards and 20 touchdowns on the ground, won the 2019 Offensive Rookie of the Year award, and was named to the last two Pro Bowl tournaments.
