Fenerbahçe Safiport took the field for the championship in the FIBA Euroleague. The Yellow-Navy Blues faced the Hungarian representative Sopron Basket in the Final-Four final hosted by Istanbul. Fenerbahce was defeated 60-55 in the match played at the Safiport Ülker Sports Hall and witnessed a great struggle.
In the final match of the Euroleague Women’s Final Four, Fenerbahçe Safiport defeated Hungarian team Sopron Basket 60-55 and finished the organization in the 2nd place. Gabby Williams, who scored 16 points in Sopron Basket, became the top scorer of the match; Alina Iagupova in Fenerbahçe Safiport finished the game with 13 points.
Sopron Basket started the game better, Williams and Fegyverneky were effective in the offense. Bringing the score to 7-0, the Hungarian team took the time-out with 6:38 before the end of the period. Unable to show a good attacking appearance after the timeout, Fenerbahçe scored its first points with a 3-pointer from Sabally with 2:34 remaining in the period: 12-3. Fenerbahce, who had a better image in the second period with Iagupova’s free throws and Williams’ effective play from under the basket, entered the last 6 minutes of the period 5 points behind: 20-15. Recovering in the second part of the period, Sopron Basket allowed Fenerbahçe to score only 4 points and finished the first half with a 10-point lead 29-19.
Fenerbahce, who entered the third period better, managed to dissolve the gap with Olcay’s scorer game and reduced the lead to 1 with 5:58 remaining: 33-32. Effective with Williams and Brooks in the rest of the period, Sopron started to open the gap again and entered the decision period 45-38 ahead.
Fenerbahce, who entered the last period more effectively, reduced the difference to 5 with the layup basket he found with Olcay 6:01 before the end of the match: 51-46. While the last minutes of the match were the scene of great excitement, Fenerbahçe reduced the lead to 3 with Sabally’s three-pointer: 58-55. Sopron increased the lead to 4 with his free throw hit 8.4 seconds before the end of the match: 59-55. Maintaining the difference in the remaining seconds, the Hungarian team won the match 60-55 and became the champion of the 2021/2022 season in Euroleague Women.
SOPRON’S FIRST CHAMPIONSHIP IN HISTORY
The Hungarian team Sopron Basket, which managed to take part in the Final Four organization for the 5th time in the club’s history, defeated Fenerbahçe Safiport and managed to take its first trophy to its museum in the final, where it took place for the second time. The Hungarian team had previously reached the final in the 2017/2018 season, but lost to UMMC Ekaterinburg in the final and could not win the cup.
