“I was taking good care of myself, I quit basketball at the age of 36, but I would play for 3 more years. I always played in Euroleague teams, I won 10 championships, but it is important to stay at the top. After playing in top teams, I did not want to lower the level,” he said.
Nazlı Eleskin’s “What is the most unforgettable moment in your career?” Upholding the question; “I won the championship in Fenerbahçe’s 100th year, I was in the team that played the Final-Four for the first time in the Euroleague with Efes. Despite everything, the World Basketball Championship final in 2010 was great. It was a great honor to play in your own country, in front of your own audience. For me, that final was a great honor. The difference between acting and management; “No matter what you do, there is no pleasure and pleasure in acting. My heart wanted to be a coach, but my logic said management. Because camps, matches… I’m tired. If I had been a coach, the same pace would have continued. If I made a decision, I would never think about the past, I would just continue on my way…”
“My wife made more sacrifices than me”
Explaining that his wife sacrificed more than him, Ömer Onan said; “While we were going to the Greece game, my wife went to the hospital for giving birth. Unfortunately, I was not with her at the important moments in the children’s lives. I was playing basketball at a high tempo almost every season until June. I missed most things. Holidays, New Year’s Eve, birthdays… Also, Yiğit saw me on the field and became more enthusiastic about basketball. Maybe I made a big sacrifice, but my wife made more sacrifices than me…”
He said that he also follows many branches besides basketball, “I try to follow every branch that has a national match. I don’t understand, I don’t know the rules, but I sat down and followed Mete Gazoz for example… It is important that our young friends play the national anthem no matter what. We have to support it…” he explained.
Wishes for the New Year, “I hope everyone’s work will be successful, the pandemic will end. Let’s go back to our healthy and joyful days.
